Who Was Grace?

The Pirate Queen of Ireland

Born in 1530 to a seafaring clan on the wild west coast of Ireland, Gráinne Ní Mháille — Grace O’Malley — became one of history’s most formidable maritime leaders. She commanded a fleet of ships and hundreds of men from her stronghold in Clew Bay, Co. Mayo.

She defied the English crown, fought off pirates and rival clans, and famously sailed up the Thames to negotiate face-to-face with Queen Elizabeth I — refusing to bow, and speaking to her as an equal.

Her spirit — fearless, free and forged by the Atlantic — lives on in every bottle we make.
